Anti-Muslim Bigotry Must Be Condemned

Ahmadiyya Muslim Community calls on all Americans to condemn bigotry against Islam and Muslims

SILVER SPRING, MD—November 26, 2021— On a day focused on giving thanks for all we are blessed with, Muslims were hurt to hear the bigoted anti-Muslim words from a member of U.S. Congress, who referred to a Muslim Congresswoman as a member of “Jihad Squad” and expressed how fear being alone with a Muslim in an elevator was alleviated only because the Muslim “doesn’t have a backpack.”

Such anti-Muslim comments have often been used to demean Muslims and accuse Islam of being a religion of terror. As the oldest Muslim organization in America, Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA calls on Americans of all backgrounds to equally share in the condemnation of all bigotry. No American should be demeaned or attacked, especially for something as dear and personal as their faith.

While Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA appreciates that the member of U.S. Congress has since apologized, more must be done to reform hatred and curb bigotry. We call on all people in positions of leadership – especially in political office – to learn more and do better. We are willing to meet with all Congressional offices to aid in the education of Islam and Muslims so we can all work together to address the needs of this country.

About the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community:
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is a dynamic, reformist and fast-growing international movement within Islam. Founded in 1889, the Community spans 213 countries with tens of millions of members. Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA, established in 1920, is the oldest American-Muslim organization.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is the only Islamic organization to believe that the long awaited messiah has come in the person of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908) of Qadian, India. Ahmad claimed to be the metaphorical second coming of Jesus of Nazareth and the divine guide, whose advent was foretold by the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad. The Community believes that God sent Ahmad, like Jesus, to end religious wars, condemn bloodshed and reinstitute morality, justice and peace. Ahmad’s advent has brought about an unprecedented era of Islamic revival and moderation. He divested Muslims of fanatical beliefs and practices by vigorously championing Islam’s true and essential teachings.
